We have all suffered from toothache once in our lives and we can safely say that it is one of the most uncomfortable pains that one can feel, as it produces a generalised pressure in the entire body. Toothache is generally due to the tooth decay or other types of gum disease, and for those raging moments of pain a fantastic alternative is the use of natural remedies, among which is the use of saffron.
Why does saffron relieve toothache?
Saffron contains various forms of flavonoids, glycosides, and anthocyanin compounds that are proven to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This study evaluates the anti-inflammatory effects of Saffron stigma on gingival indices in patients with marginal generalized plaque-induced gingivitis.

In this study, it was found that using aqueous extract of Saffron stigma flower containing toothpaste might have a positive effect on some gingival indices in patients with gingivitis.
How do I go about making a saffron mouthwash?
Infusions which contain saffron that are well-concentrated and topically applied onto teeth and greatly relieves pain when experiencing toothache pain. This is not only used on adults, but can also be a good homemade remedy for babies who are undergoing teething.

Saffron mouthwash
- 5 cloves
- 1 cup of water

- 3 saffron strands

Heat water in a saucepan and add the 5 cloves. When the mixture is about to boil include saffron and a pinch of salt, but must keep a close eye on the saucepan as when the water starts to boil it must be removed from the heat so as to maintain all the ingredients’ properties.
To eliminate all the infected substances, pour the mouthwash into a glass bottle and place to boil in a saucepan and once the liquid of the mouthwash is warm pour it into a glass.
It’s time to gargle or rinse your mouth with the homemade saffron mouthwash mixture, and you’ll start to feel pain relief in the area.
